Henry Ford once famously said: "Any customer can have a car painted any color...so long as it is black". A similar dynamic has existed in the NYC TLC industry, a market now dominated by Uber and Lyft. Drivers usually have limited options.
I saw this as an opportunity and began to rent out BMWs to TLC drivers, eventually building a fleet. Many thought the idea of renting out BMWs to use for Uber and Lyft was foolish, especially in NYC. How can you make money at the rates you're charging? Isn't the maintenance expensive? Don't BMWs breakdown after 100,000 miles?
Many of the concerns were fair warnings. However, as time went on, I became more adept at managing the business, drivers and fleet. I built a team around me, which helped the company adopt best practices and come up with innovative solutions to the problems we faced.
We understand the challenges people face in this industry because we operate in it. TLC summons and administration, EZPass, parking tickets, insurance, accidents, major maintenance, towing, body work, Uber/Lyft admin, flooding, engine rebuilds, finding parts, buying cars, renting cars, managing drivers and payments, working through a pandemic, etc. - we have seen and managed a lot. We also believe there are many opportunities to help people succeed in the TLC industry, so they can reach their financial goals.
Creating TLCMKT is the next logical step. There is a need for a "one-stop shop" and trustable online community for the TLC industry. Whether a driver wants to buy, sell, rent, review or repair a car, buy tires & parts, find a good service provider or needs help managing their business and health - we want to be the platform of choice.
